How old are your kiddos? Are you still in the baby, toddler, or elementary years? Or have you begun the transition into having tweens or teens?
In this conversation, you’ll hear Nellie and I discuss that transition between the first and second half of childhood and what it looks like specifically.
We’ll also discuss how to launch versus release our kiddos into the world.
Nellie is a wife, mother to 4 teenage daughters, and an author and speaker in the space of Family Life & Leadership. She focuses on helping parents love & lead their teen/tween daughters in a way that teaches them to love & lead themselves while building a strong foundation of worth, esteem & confidence all before they leave home! Her background is in biology and psychology, from humpbacks to humans, and she has invested decades of her life into personal, family, faith and leadership development. Most of all, she believes the best way to change the world is through one living room at a time!
In our conversation, we covered a variety of topics such as:
- All about Nellie’s business, how it started, and what she does
- The difference between the first and the second half of childhood
- 6570 Thoughts
- How to connect with your children on a weekly basis
- 5 things to do to help your kids now
- How to have courageous conversations with your kids
- What to help build for our children to prepare them for adulthood
- The aspects Nellie thinks need to be understood or explored before we can build a strong foundation for our children
- How Nellie’s parenting course speaks to all of this. (Check the links below for the course!)
The First Half of Childhood:
According to Nellie, the first whole part of parenting is meeting physiological needs.
And next which is still in the first half of parenting is this level of beautiful security. Teaching our kids: You are loved. You are okay. You are safe. I will protect you. Our home is safe. Your environment is safe. It’s not just physical safety, it’s also emotional and mental safety.
The Second Half of Childhood:
During the second half of childhood, then we are transitioning into building these foundations of worth, self-esteem, and confidence. And these types of questions and conversations can happen as early s 5 or 6 these days.
That worthiness piece is so crucial and critical in our adolescence today.
6570 Idea:
That’s how many days are in 18 years. That is the window of parenthood that is critical, unique to all of the rest of their life unique to all of the rest of our relationship that we’re going to have right there in the home.
One of the biggest things, maybe the biggest, but one of the biggest things for sure, that I recommend to everybody is to have weekly one-on-one time with your children, one parent with one child.
That is where magic is going to happen with the connection that you have with the communication that you have. And with the clarity that you have to move forward and that that child has to move forward and your understanding of that child.
During that one-on-one time, be sure that you are being open and vulnerable about your own life and having them speak into that as well.
5 Things to Do To Help Your Kids:
- Observe. Do a lot of observation as a parent. You want to look at their tone, their body language, their habits that they might have had before and they don’t have any more or they might have picked up, etc.
- Not assume. Don’t assume that tomorrow is going to be the same as today.
- Know that the hormone surge is coming. Know that you are going to have to make some changes there, and then be present.
- Have one-one-one time with each kid
- Be present, open, and vulnerable with your kids in conversations.
