Do you ever avoid looking at your business finances because it feels too overwhelming—or maybe even a little scary?
You’re not alone. This week on The Organized Mompreneur Podcast, I sat down with Jackie North, a CPA and the founder of The Peak CFO, to talk all things money, mindset, and margin. Jackie has a gift for helping mom business owners ditch the shame around their numbers and step confidently into the role of financial decision-maker. This episode is packed with wisdom on how to release guilt, steward your finances well, and create margin for both profit and purpose.
Jackie is a wife, a mama of three, and a fractional CFO who knows what it’s like to build a business in the margins of naptime and carpool. She’s also one of the incredible sponsors of The Purpose Gathering Live 2025, and her insights on this episode will leave you feeling empowered, not ashamed, about your numbers.
From Party Supplies to Profit Strategy: Jackie’s Story
Jackie’s entrepreneurial journey started when her oldest was just six months old and she began selling party supplies from her living room. Eventually, she followed a nudge to pursue accounting, a path that seemed crazy at the time but has now turned into a thriving business helping others understand their financials.
After working in public accounting and experiencing burnout, Jackie knew there had to be a better way. Today, she helps mompreneurs take control of their business finances without the guilt or confusion.
Why Women Avoid Their Numbers (and Why That Needs to Change)
So many of us carry shame around money, whether it’s feeling like we “should know more,” comparing ourselves to others, or being afraid to face the truth of where our business really stands. Jackie challenges us to:
- Release guilt and negative beliefs about money
- Let go of comparison (you don’t know what’s happening behind someone else’s business!)
- Approach your finances with curiosity, not judgment
Because your numbers? They’re not the enemy. They’re just telling a story, and you get to decide what happens next.
How to Run Your Numbers (Without Freaking Out)
Jackie walks us through the basics of reading a profit and loss statement (P&L) and how to think about your numbers strategically:
- Start by tracking revenue, expenses, and net profit
- Think of it like budgeting your time, what’s essential, what’s unnecessary, and what’s working?
- Forecast your cash flow: If revenue stays the same, can you sustain your current expenses?
She encourages us to set aside time each week or month to review our numbers, without emotion or shame. Just honest data that helps you make wise decisions.
Faith, Fear, and Financial Stewardship
As a Christian, Jackie sees money not just as numbers on a spreadsheet, but as a tool God gives us to steward well. She shared a powerful story about telling her dad she was scared to leave her job and start her own business. His response? “So what if you’re scared?”
Fear doesn’t mean stop. It means you’re stepping into something new, and with God, you don’t have to do it alone. Jackie reminds us:
- Fear is normal, but it doesn’t disqualify you from stepping forward
- Your business is a resource God can use to bless others
- Stewarding your finances well is an act of obedience and trust
As Luke 16:10 reminds us: “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”
Boosting Your Margins and Paying Yourself Well
Jackie breaks down two simple ways to create more profit:
- Raise your prices – Especially if you haven’t done so in the last 6–12 months. Ask: Is my pricing growing with me?
- Eliminate hidden leaks – Unnecessary subscriptions, overly fancy tools, or spending based on comparison rather than strategy
She encourages us to shift our mindset from dimming our light to serve others… to strengthening our light so we can shine even brighter for those we’re called to help.
Avoiding the Biggest Mistake: Inaction
The most common mistake Jackie sees? Avoiding your numbers altogether. Like she says, “Just start. Look at your last three months of expenses, forecast them forward, and check your sustainability.”
It doesn’t have to be fancy. You don’t need a CFO or complicated software. You just need to show up, be honest, and give yourself grace to grow.
